BUCKINGHAM MAKES HISTORY IN LATE MODOU JANNEH MEMORIAL INTERMEDIATE TOURNAMENT

Buckingham United made history by becoming the first club to win Alieu Mourinho Jabang’s sponsored Super Cup three times in a row in Gunjur.

The "Palace" boys achieved the feat with a 2 – 1 win over close neighbors Young Santos United in the season opener of the 2018/19 Intermediate football campaign.

In front of a large crowd at Gunjur Nyamina Arena, Green Vision only need two minutes to unlock the Santos defence when star striker Eliman Ceesay who spent last season on lone at Kolomba United turns defenders inside-out and slot low into the bottom right corner of Bakary Bajo’s net.

Reigning league champions Santos quickly realizes the ambitions of the knock out cup holders and started to show some intent and aim, by forcing Buckingham to run for cover for most part of the first half, in the process forward Ousman Janneh failed to restore parity in a one-on-one situation.

He was made to pay for that miss when Buckingham double their lead. Experience centre-back Abdoulie Touray rose unopposed to nod home Dodou Janneh’s corner and put his side out of sight.

Santos who made a historic comeback four years ago when they came from two goals down against Buckingham United in a thrilling 3 – 3 draw in the league cup final, tried as they might but could not find the means and spirit to replicate something similar, even though Ousman J Janneh pulled one back in the second half but that only proved a mere consolation as Green Vision defend the slender advantage to the final whistle.

As winners Buckingham went away with the trophy and three thousand dalasis winner’s cash prize, while Santos received a consolatory prize of two thousand dalasis.

Young Santos impressive forward Ousman J Janneh was awarded with cash of five hundred dalasis as Ebrima Jones Jabang’s man of the match.

Having achieved the milestone, Buckingham United are declared the rightful owners of the cup as the rules and regulations governing the tournament guaranteed any team that wins a cup for three times consecutively to own it.
